Why Yorkshire is Ready for Its Audio Post-Production Breakthrough

London has long been the UK’s central hub for film and television production, with the majority of facilities, talent, and resources concentrated in the capital. However, there’s growing discussion around the need to distribute production work more evenly across the UK, and many believe that Yorkshire’s facilities and talent are being significantly underutilized. While there’s a push to increase regional production quotas, some argue that more needs to be done to strengthen regional contributions, as production companies are missing out on the economic and creative potential that regions like Yorkshire offer.

With production companies adapting to tighter budgets, Yorkshire’s high-end studios offer an ideal solution. Equipped to handle complex, large-scale work, these studios can provide production companies with flexibility and cost-effectiveness without sacrificing quality. However, it’s essential for production companies to see Yorkshire as a serious alternative if we are to make this shift a reality.

Yorkshire’s Growing Resources: Tech and Talent

Yorkshire offers impressive post-production resources that rival some of London’s top facilities. For instance, Sticks & Glass in Leeds features a Dolby Atmos facility, where I recently completed sound design and mixing for a cinema commercial. However, for Yorkshire to become a true post-production hub, continued investment in high-quality facilities and experienced operators is essential.

This combination of advanced facilities and talented professionals makes Yorkshire more than capable of delivering the same level of sound quality, immersive experience, and creative drive found in the South—making it a strong choice for producers and directors seeking high-end results.

Why Yorkshire is the Perfect Base for High-End Production

Working in Yorkshire offers production companies numerous advantages beyond cost savings. The region’s stunning landscapes have already attracted Hollywood’s attention, with productions like Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and The Witcher recently filmed here. For both international and local productions, Yorkshire’s top-tier post-production facilities provide the natural next step, enabling projects to remain regional from filming through to post. This approach not only enhances budget efficiency but also streamlines workflow, allowing local productions to benefit from the same high-end resources without needing to look outside the area.

Plus, with remote collaboration tools, teams can work seamlessly across regions, bridging any geographical gaps between Yorkshire and London. For production companies, Yorkshire becomes a win-win option, offering cost savings and top-tier results without the overheads that come with working in the capital.

Talent is Everywhere – It’s Time for Producers to Look North

With much of the industry’s attention focused on London, Yorkshire’s capabilities often go overlooked. As I work to establish a high-end audio post presence in Yorkshire, it’s a priority for me to support the next generation of audio professionals emerging from regional institutions like Leeds and Leeds Arts University. By sharing my knowledge and experience, I aim to help nurture the skills of new talent, not only providing them with a strong foundation but also encouraging them not to be deterred by the “London-only” focus. I want them to see that they can achieve their dreams and ambitions right here, contributing to the UK’s fantastic TV industry without having to relocate.

As a young aspiring sound engineer in South Africa, I often dreamed of working on a BBC David Attenborough documentary within the incredible UK TV landscape. While I may not realise that exact dream, building something similar here in Yorkshire and helping future entrants achieve their own goals even faster would be an honour.

Yorkshire’s audio post-production industry could be on the cusp of an exciting new chapter. With impressive filming locations, talented professionals, and facilities ready to meet the demands of high-end production, the region is ready to support more of the UK’s most creative work. By looking beyond London, production companies can find a vibrant, cost-effective, and high-quality option here in Yorkshire—an excellent foundation for projects that connect and resonate.

What do you think?

  • I Agree - There should be more high end work in Yorkshire!

  • You know nothing - London is where it's at.

  • I don't know enough about it.
