Since moving to the UK two years ago, I’ve observed that London often takes center stage as the hub of creativity and production, particularly in the post-production industry. However, why should all the excitement and recognition be reserved for the capital? With top-notch facilities and exceptional talent flourishing in the North of England particularly Leeds, it's time to shift the spotlight and explore the incredible opportunities that this vibrant city has to offer.

The Hidden Powerhouses of the North

The North of England has long been known for its rich cultural scene, but its potential in the post-production industry is frequently overlooked. Despite having state-of-the-art facilities and skilled professionals, Northern cities face challenges that have contributed to a shortage of post-production jobs. Let’s delve into why London should not be your go-to location for post-production services and what can be done to enhance appeal up North.

Cutting-Edge Technology

We aren't lagging in technological advancements. The North boasts access to the latest software and hardware, including Dolby Atmos dub stages, which are becoming a requirement for delivering top-tier post-production work. From immersive sound design to high-definition visual effects, There are some facilities fully equipped to meet the demands of contemporary production standards.

Cost-Effective Solutions

One of the most compelling reasons to consider post-production services in the North is cost savings. As budgets tighten and the industry adjusts to increasing commissioned content, working outside of London offers significant financial advantages. Reduced operational costs translate to more competitive pricing without compromising on quality, making it an ideal choice for maximizing budgets.

Untapped Talent

The entire country is home to a huge pool of talented professionals who bring innovative approaches to post-production. While many skilled individuals are drawn to London, there is a strong and growing talent base up North that can offer fresh insights and creative solutions. By investing in this local talent, productions can benefit from diverse expertise and a competitive edge. Regional Focus and Community

Working in cities like Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle also means contributing to regional growth and supporting local economies, an initiative often spoken about since the recent highlighting of the freelancer "crisis" in the TV & Film industry. Investing in these post-production sectors helps develop a more balanced and inclusive industry landscape. This not only nurtures local talent but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration that enhances the overall production experience.

A Breath of Fresh Air

If you need to attend the post-production stage, these cities and their surroundings can offer a beautiful landscape that provides a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the capital. Imagine stepping out of your session into picturesque surroundings, which can inspire creativity and provide a refreshing change of pace. Addressing the Shortage Despite these advantages, a northern shortage of post-production jobs can be attributed to several factors:

  • Market Dynamics: The concentration of high-profile projects in London influences where budgets are allocated.

  • Talent Migration: Skilled professionals often move to London for broader opportunities and higher salaries.

  • Industry Perception: An ingrained bias associates high-quality work with London, affecting where clients choose to invest.

  • Economic Factors: Levels of investment and funding opportunities in the north may still lag behind London.

However, with increased investment in local facilities and infrastructure, stronger networking with broadcasters, and a focus on developing local talent, northern based post houses can overcome these challenges and establish itself as a leading post-production hub.

Embracing the Future

The tech available today ensures that geographical location should no longer be a barrier to high-quality post-production services. Not to mention how quickly some people criticize the transport links that connect virtually the entire country. Coming from South Africa, where using public transport often felt like a risky endeavor, I can truly appreciate how well-connected and efficient the transport network is here. It’s all at your fingertips. Based on this, there are several compelling alternatives to London, with world-class facilities, cost-effective solutions, and untapped talent. By embracing these opportunities, the industry can foster a more diverse, innovative, and inclusive production environment.

So next time you’re considering where to take your project, remember: London doesn’t have to be the only option. The North is ready to deliver the same level of excellence, with a local touch that makes all the difference.
